Myths, legends, and fairy tails are popular themes for tattoos. But Medusa tattoos are an especially popular choice.

The Medusa was a monstrous creature from Greek mythology who was described as having the face of a hideous human woman with living venomous snakes instead of hair. She didn’t start out ugly though; originally she was a beautiful golden-haired maiden…

…Buuuuut, she had some sexy-fun-times and offended a goddess.

As the story goes, Medusa was a devoted priestess of Athena who had been committed to her vows of celibacy… Until Poseidon came along and “wooed” her. She was predictably smitten and agreed to marry him, giving zero fucks about her vows by that point.

This act of hubris from one of her own priestesses pissed Athena off pretty bad. So to punish Medusa, Athena changed her golden locks of hair into venomous snakes and her once beautiful eyes became blood shot orbs that would turn onlookers to stone.

Thus, she fled her homeland and lived a miserable, lonely existence until she was eventually killed by the hero Perseus. But Perseus is a whole other thing, which we won’t get into at this time.
