Our Featured Artist for the month of September is Josh Fields, owner and artist at Platinum Rose Studio & Gallery
. Josh began developing his artistic abilities from an early age. He was heavily involved in the arts throughout high school and even had some of his early work exhibited at the Cedar Rapids Art Gallery during that time.
Josh’s introduction to the tattoo world was at the age of 19, when he got his first tattoo. His tattoo career began in 1998 when he started an apprenticeship at the legendary Hardcore Tattoo in Cedar Rapids, Iowa under the tutelage of Hank D. Bertka.
Josh remained at Hardcore Tattoo for 12 years, until he moved on in 2010 to open his own ‘artistic sanctuary’, Platinum Rose Studio & Gallery. The studio frequently hosts art exhibits including living music and full cocktail bar.
As an artist, Josh’s work is always evolving and expanding. He says that he focuses on versatility with his tattoo work.
“I tend to Incorporate line fundamentals occasionally as well a slight amount of illustrative concepts for fun. This truly allows me a better result and a client that can appreciate the uniqueness of their tattoo more.”
Josh’s advice for someone looking to get his or her first tattoo:
“Do research into the studio, the artist, his or her’s artwork characteristics. Check all licensing for that area, experience level and always check portfolio as well finished work.”
Josh’s advice for a tattoo artists who are just getting started:
“Get a proper apprenticeship, under a licensed experienced tattoo artist! Be patient, be humble and if you do not tattoo for the first or second year of the apprenticeship do not give up…embrace the grind.”
